Wake County Jail Roster

The Wake County Jail Register in North Carolina is a public tool that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody at the local detention center. At WakeCourt.us, you can find publicly available information about individuals who have recently been arrested or are being held at the facility. Additionally, data is available through the official website of the Wake County Sheriff's Office, in person at the detention center's reception, or by phone. The register allows you to determine the custody status of a person, view the charges filed, and obtain basic arrest information. The Wake County Sheriff's Office maintains this register and updates it regularly on its official portal.

Search Current Inmates in Wake Jail

To find information about current inmates, use one of the methods below.

Online Search

  1. Visit WakeCourt.us, where public court and arrest data for the county is collected.
  2. Open the inmate search page on the official Wake County Sheriff's website. The system contains a search field where you enter the last name or booking number.
  3. If the register is displayed as a scrollable list, use the browser function Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) to quickly find the desired name.

To start the search, you will need:

  • The person's full legal name (last name and first name in Latin script)
  • Booking number, if known

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public register — this information is confidential according to state law.

By Phone

Call the detention center directly. The operator can confirm if a specific person is being held if you provide the full name and date of birth.

In Person

Visit the detention center's reception during business hours. The visitor information window is located in the lobby.

Find Wake Jail Booking Records Online

When a person is brought to the detention center, a booking record is created — this is the first official document that records the fact of being held in custody. It contains several key elements:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • List of charges filed
  • Name of the agency that made the arrest (Raleigh Police, State Patrol, Sheriff, etc.)

These records usually appear in the online register within a few hours after the detainee is processed. The simplest way to view them is to use the inmate search tool on the sheriff's website. If you need a copy of the full booking record, not just the registry data, submit a public records request to the Wake County Sheriff's Office. Note: some details related to ongoing investigations may be restricted from public access.

Search the Wake Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The register supports two main search methods. Each is useful in different situations.

Search by Last Name

Enter the person's last name in the appropriate field. Optionally, add the first name to narrow the results. A few practical tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one letter can change the result.
  • Try entering just the last name without the first name if unsure of the exact spelling.
  • Remember that the system searches by legal name, not by nickname or shortened version.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, this method provides the most accurate result. Simply enter the number, and the system will immediately show the corresponding record.

What to Do if the Search Yields No Results

An empty result does not always mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  1. The person has not yet been processed — there is a certain time between physical delivery to the detention center and the appearance of the record in the system.
  2. The person has already been released, and the record has disappeared from the current register.
  3. The name is entered incorrectly or differs from the legal name.

In such cases, call the detention center at (919) 856-5400 and verify the information directly.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Wake

The Wake County Jail Register is updated regularly throughout the day, but this does not happen instantly. Between the time of arrest, completion of the booking procedure, and the appearance of the record in the online system, it may take from one to several hours. Sometimes the delay is longer — for example, on weekends or during mass arrests.

The main limitations to consider:

  • The register only shows those who are currently in custody. It is not an archive of all past arrests.
  • After a person is released, their record disappears from the public list — sometimes within minutes, sometimes with a slight delay.
  • Data entry errors occur: incorrect spelling of a name, missing middle name, or confusion with the date of birth can make a record difficult to access through standard search.

If you need information about past arrests or releases, the online register will not help. To obtain historical data, submit a public records request to the Wake County Sheriff's Office. You can also check court records through the North Carolina Court System portal, where data on criminal cases, including charges and court outcomes, is available.
